37 kilometres up from Moûtiers
The road from Moûtiers climbs through Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Les Menuires to Val Thorens. It is the longest climb in the Three Valleys, and chains go on in snowfall. The village is almost entirely pedestrian: cars are left at the entrance, and the driver takes you to the unloading point nearest your hotel.
Why Val Thorens
Its altitude makes it the most snow-sure resort around: people come at the start and end of the season, when there is little snow lower down. Skiing starts right at the hotel doors, and via Mottaret and Courchevel the whole Three Valleys are within reach on skis — about 600 kilometres of pistes.
