How to get from Malpensa to Zermatt

You cannot drive into the village

Zermatt bans petrol and diesel cars: inside, only small electric vehicles and horse-drawn carriages move about. Everyone arriving under their own steam stops at Täsch, at the Matterhorn Terminal, where there is a multi-storey car park and a station. The shuttle train runs every twenty minutes and reaches the village in twelve. This is not an optional change — it is the only way in.

By train, or by car as far as Täsch

From Milan the train runs via the Simplon to Brig or Visp, then the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn — about five hours with changes, and a beautiful ride. By car it is 250 km from Malpensa to Täsch, either over the Simplon pass or through the Gotthard tunnel. In winter the pass is sometimes closed and the route detours, which is why we quote a range of 3 h 30 min – 4 h 10 min rather than a single figure.

The transfer, and what happens next

≈ €490 per car to the terminal at Täsch. The driver tracks your flight, waits with a name sign and helps carry your ski bags to the shuttle platform — with skis and suitcases that matters more than it sounds. Zermatt skis into May, and from the village you can cross to Italian Cervinia and be back the same day: bring your passport.

The train is a strong option here: €60–90 and five hours, half of it a beautiful ride. The car wins on an evening arrival, with a group and with luggage — but it too only reaches Täsch: the last five kilometres are the shuttle either way.
