How to get from Naples to Positano

Checked: 24 August 2026 · prices and timetables from official operator data
There is no direct public transport. The classic route is the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento (~€4, 70 min) plus a SITA bus along the coast (~€2.90, 40–60 min) — 2 to 3 hours in total, with a change. In summer there is also a ferry (~€25–35, 80–90 min). Fastest and door to door is a private transfer: ≈ €120 and about 1 h 20.

Train plus bus

The Circumvesuviana runs from Napoli Garibaldi station to Sorrento — no air conditioning and packed in season. From there a SITA bus takes the SS163 hairpins: beautiful, but in high season you may not squeeze on with a suitcase.

The ferry

From April to October it leaves from the Beverello pier: comfortable and scenic, but the landing stage in Positano is at the bottom of the village, so you will be climbing up to your hotel. Cancelled in rough seas.

A private transfer

From the airport or the city: about 1 h 20 by motorway and coast road, ≈ €120 for a sedan. The drivers take the SS163 every day, and you can add a stop at Pompeii on the way (+€40).

On a budget, travelling light and out of season, train plus bus works fine. In summer, with luggage or with a family, a transfer saves two hours and every nerve you would spend on the changes.
