Checked: 5 September 2026 · prices and timetables from official operator data
This is the closest Swiss resort to Milan, and unlike Zermatt you can drive right to your hotel. By train it is a single change

From Milan the train runs on the main line to Lugano and on through the Gotthard to Göschenen. There you change to the local railway, which climbs to Andermatt in about fifteen minutes. That is roughly three and a half hours in total — quick by Swiss mountain standards, and a beautiful ride in itself.

The road is reliable in any weather

The Oberalp and Furka passes are closed in winter, which alarms anyone looking at a map. But the Gotthard tunnel works all year and the approach to Andermatt runs through it — so a snowfall in the mountains does not cut the resort off, unlike many of its neighbours. The Swiss road vignette is included in the price of our journey.

Gemsstock, Sedrun and the Glacier Express

Gemsstock offers steep runs and holds snow into late spring; Sedrun has wide, gentle slopes for families. The Glacier Express also leaves from here towards Zermatt: eight hours of panoramic railway that many set aside a whole day for. The transfer is ≈ €390 per car, 2 hours 45 minutes to the hotel door; for four people that is €98 each.

The train is genuinely good here: one change and three and a half hours. The car wins on an evening arrival, with a group and skis, and because it goes to your door rather than the station.
