How to get from Malpensa to La Thuile

The last kilometres are road only

The Aosta — Pré-Saint-Didier line has been closed since 2015, so the train only gets you to Aosta. From there a bus runs to Pré-Saint-Didier and then climbs the hairpins to La Thuile at 1,441 metres. Buses are rare in the evening, so with a late arrival public transport is hardly an option.

Two countries on one ski pass

The Espace San Bernardo ski area — about 150 kilometres of pistes — links La Thuile with La Rosière in France over the Little St Bernard Pass. The road over the pass is closed in winter, but on skis the border is open: ski in Italy in the morning, have lunch in France. The snow holds well here, which is why the resort is nicknamed “little Siberia”.

The transfer and what comes next

≈ €380 per car, 2 hours 40 minutes from Malpensa to the hotel door; for four people that is €95 each. The driver tracks your flight and waits with a name sign. Courmayeur and Mont Blanc are twenty minutes away — many people spend a day skiing there too.

If you are in no hurry and travelling light, the train and bus via Aosta will be cheaper. The car wins on an evening arrival, with a group and with skis: the last hairpins with ski bags are a test of their own.
